Trends in Hospitality Sales/Management
Trends in Yield Management
As a hotel manager or owner, there are a number of things you
can (and should) be doing to support the efforts of your sales team.
Give them a quality product Retain a great staff, and keep your hotel
clean, well maintained and a great place to work. Curb appeal is the
first impression your property gives, so make it count!
Be sure your telephones are being answered! You are spending a
lot of money marketing your hotel's 800-number -- yet it is often the last
priority at the desk. Every time that phone rings and doesn't get
answered, you are ignoring a customer, and potentially losing
revenue. Train your front desk to answer your 800 number within 2
rings, every time, and then use a shopping service like Signature
Worldwide (currently offering a free trial of its mystery shopping
services) or Hospitality SoftNet to test call your reservations line and
see how your employees stack up. Train them, motivate them, test
them and reward them! Your guests and bottom line will benefit.
Create Message on Hold to expand the customer's contact with your
marketing message in a positive and professional way. If possible,
use music that complements your property and destination. Alternate
a man's voice and a woman's voice, and definitely use a professional
service to record this (otherwise, there are licensing issues). Of
course, talk up your hotel's best features and packages in the hold
messages, and consider changing your specials quarterly.
Use Your Hotel's Marquis and indoor "reader boards" creatively.
Welcome groups (everyone, social groups especially, gets a kick out
of seeing their name on a sign!) or promote upcoming holiday
packages. Announce a property award or new service ("Now with free
high speed Internet" - "Pillowtop Serta Sleepers in every room" - "Free
Deluxe Continental Breakfast Daily" - "Gold Award Winner")
On slow weeks, put up something simple like, "Welcome to ABC City,
Come on In!" Never leave your marquis blank. This is valuable
signage, you control what it says, people can see it 24/7/365, and best
of all, it is FREE!
